Just days after Nagpur district was declared a ‘Tourism District’, the Government is set to unveil a new attraction for nature lovers and tourists. A solar-powered boat safari will commence in the Pench River backwaters from October 1, adding a fresh dimension to the tourism offerings of the Pench Tiger Reserve. The initiative, aimed at promoting sustainable and eco-friendly tourism, will operate on the expansive Pench reservoir and offer visitors a chance to experience the region’s natural beauty from the water, informed Akshay Gajbhiye, Deputy Field Director, Pench Tiger Reserve. Unlike conventional motorboats, the new vessels will run entirely on solar energy, making them a zero-emission attraction.

 

The absence of engine noise and water pollution is expected to provide a peaceful experience while minimising disturbance to wildlife and aquatic ecosystems. Two premium solar boats, each with a capacity of 24 passengers, have been introduced. The safari is expected to appeal not only to tourists but also to birdwatchers, photographers, nature enthusiasts and history lovers. The project offers two routes. The first route will operate between Kolitmara and Nandpur/Nagarghota and back, covering around 10 km and lasting approximately one-and-a-half hours. The second route will take visitors from Kolitmara to Kuwara Bhivsen and back through dense forest stretches, covering about 28 km over three hours. The safari promises a unique blend of nature, wildlife and heritage. Visitors will be able to witness the scenic Pench backwaters, observe a variety of resident and migratory birds, and explore the surroundings of the historic Vakataka-era remains near Nandpur.

 

Officials said the calm waters of the reservoir provide an excellent habitat for bird species such as painted storks, black-headed ibis, darters, grey herons, fish eagles and several species of kingfishers. Tourists may also spot wildlife including gaur, deer, sambar, peafowl and other animals approaching the water’s edge. The shorter safari will be priced at Rs 400 per person on weekdays and Rs 500 on weekends, while the longer three-hour safari will cost Rs 800 on weekdays and Rs 1,000 on weekends, inclusive of guide charges.

 

Online booking facilities have been made available through the Pench Tiger Reserve portal, while offline reservations can be made at the Minko Tourism Complex booking counter at Kolitmara. Officials believe the solar safari could emerge as one of the most distinctive eco-tourism experiences in Vidarbha, combining conservation, recreation and heritage interpretation in a single journey across the Pench waters.
