CONTINUOUS rain has affected normal life in Jabalpur for the past two days. The rain has made commuting difficult and many residents have been forced to remain indoors. A strong monsoon system continues to bring rain across Madhya Pradesh. A red alert has been issued for Narmadapuram and Chhindwara on Thursday. Orange alerts have been issued for six districts and yellow alerts for 20 districts. Some areas may receive more than four inches of rain in 24 hours. According to the Weather Department, the rainfall activity is likely to continue till September 6. However, the weather may start becoming clearer from September 7.

 

Day and night temperatures are also expected to rise. Meanwhile, continuous rainfall in Mandla, Dindori and the Amarkantak region has increased the inflow into Bargi Dam. Despite below-average rainfall in Jabalpur district, the dam has once again filled up. At 12 noon on Thursday, the water level reached 422.35 metres and five gates were opened by around one metre each. Later, due to heavy inflow, 13 gates had to be opened by an average height of 1.96 metres at around 3 pm. Water discharge was increased from 1,130 cumecs to 3,802 cumecs to control the reservoir level. The release has raised the water level at Narmada ghats by around seven to eight feet. The district administration has appealed to people to stay away from Narmada ghats and nearby riverbank areas. The discharge may be increased or reduced depending on the inflow into the dam.
