Stray cattle

STRAY cattle have emerged as a growing problem on the roads of Jabalpur. Herds of cows, calves and oxen are frequently seen sitting or moving on busy roads, crossings and market areas. Their presence is causing traffic problems and raising concerns over road safety. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation and its Haka Gang have failed to deal with the problem effectively. Despite being responsible for removing stray cattle from city roads, the civic body it taking little sustained action. The Haka Gang conducts drives only occasionally. There is no visible regular monitoring of busy roads and vulnerable areas. Such negligence is directly affecting public safety and causing inconvenience to residents. Motorists often have to slow down suddenly or change lanes to avoid the animals. Two wheeler riders and pedestrians face greater risks.

Residents said minor accidents and dangerous situations have become common in several parts of the city. The problem has also raised questions about the civic body’s efforts to control stray cattle. The Jabalpur Municipal Corporation has a Haka Gang for the purpose. However, citizens said cattle catching drives are not conducted regularly. Residents feel that the presence of cattle on roads and animals feeding on garbage weakens the city’s clean image. It also creates unhygienic conditions in public areas. Another concern is the practice of leaving dairy cattle unattended after milking. Such animals are allowed to move freely during the day and are often taken back in the evening. Residents alleged that there is no effective action against owners who allow their cattle to roam on public roads. Citizens and social organisations have demanded regular cattle catching drives, strict penalties for owners and better monitoring of vulnerable areas. They have appealed to the JMC administration to act before the growing menace results in more accidents and further affects traffic and cleanliness in the city.
