While Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) is rapidly installing advanced smart meters to ensure transparent and accurate billing, the utility company launched a drive in the Khapri branch area under the Butibori sub-division, detecting 14 cases of electricity theft via direct service wire bypassing in a single day. High-tech smart meters had already been installed on the premises of all 14 consumers. However, rather than tampering with the meter mechanisms directly, the consumers bypassed the main incoming cable to evade detection by the smart meters. As a result, power was drawn uninterrupted without registering a single unit on the meters. MSEDCL officials and staff uncovered the racket, and work on assessing the stolen electricity along with penal charges for all 14 cases is currently underway on a war footing. Proceedings to enforce strict criminal and punitive action under Section 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003 against the defaulters are moving swiftly.

 

Following this drive, inspection campaigns across industrial, commercial, and residential sectors in the Nagpur Zone have been intensified. Additionally, four power theft cases were uncovered in the Shantinagar area. One case each was detected in Bhutiya Darwaza, Gandhibagh, Goundkhairi, Bhiwapur, Chapegarhi, Salwa, and Gowari, while two cases were reported in Khapa. MSEDCL has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy against power theft, issuing special targets to flying squads and local authorities to detect illegal usage.

 

A strict watch is also being maintained on connections currently disconnected due to unpaid dues. Unauthorised power consumption leads to short circuits, transformer failures, and life-threatening fire hazards, causing substantial financial losses to MSEDCL and risking public safety. Rajesh Naik, Chief Engineer of MSEDCL’s Nagpur Zone, issued a stern appeal highlighting “MSEDCL is committed to bringing discipline and transparency to the power distribution system. Every connection is under close monitoring. Citizens should not fall for false promises or inducements and must rely strictly on authorized electricity connections.”
