Tigress Priya dies of old age at Van Vihar National Park

The 21-year-old ailing tigress ‘Priya’ died of old age at Van Vihar National Park. The tigress was under intensive care for past 25 days and she was not taking her food. The park management kept the feline under special monitoring unit veterinary doctors. The tigress was not taking for past one month. Officials of the park said that tigress was old and she had completed her average life period. The tigress was declining her health continuously even after special care of veterinary doctors. Normal life of a tigress in wild is assume as 10 to 15 years while in captivity normal life of tigress is assume as 16 to 18 years. The tigress has already lived bonus life tenure at Van Vihar.
 
Though treatment of the feline was continuing but she was now showing improvement due to old age. The tigress was brought to Van Vihar during year 2006 at the age of 7 years from Jaipur after being released from a circus. Tigress Priya developed a wound on her lowest jaw on August 30. The park management kept on treatment continue. Park officials said that the tigress was weak since starting and her hind legs were quite weak. During year 2008 the tigress suffered from trypanosomiasis and during year 2009 she suffered from pyometra diseases.
 
However, tigress was treated well by the park team. She was the oldest tigress of Van Vihar. Dr Ashok Jain, Deputy Director at Van Vihar National Park said, “Veterinary doctors were monitoring the tigress for 24x7 through camera. Proper diet was being given to her but she refused to take food. After 20 days of illness, she took small amount of meat last week and then again she rejected the food.”
