Normally it is seen that the demand for eggs starts picking up as soon the festival of Navratra ends. Its cost also witnesses hike during the season. However, it appears that eggs are not following the set pattern in the current scenario as the prices have been falling for the last eight to ten days. “Egg prices have dipped by about 30 to 40 paise per piece in the wholesale market since Dussehra in Nagpur city. Egg that was sold at a price of Rs 400 to Rs 410 per 100 piece in the wholesale market during Navratra has now come down to Rs 370-390 100 piece, said Moiz Burhani of Vidarbha Eggs. Burhani said that the suppliers had increased the rates well ahead of Navratra and now they have to bring it down.
There is less demand for eggs right now and the prices are diluting. The trend may continue till Diwali,” he said adding that the demand will pick up only after the Diwali festival. He also said that the prices may go up by 40-50 paise per piece post Diwali. It is important to note that the wholesalers based in the city sell roughly 8 to 9 lakh eggs per days (in the normal season).
The figure goes up in peak winter when over 10 lakh eggs are sold here every day. The traders based here supply eggs to retailers spread in various parts of Nagpur, Chhindwada, Seoni and other nearby places. In almost all these parts, eggs are being sold at a price of Rs 5.50 to Rs 6.00 per piece in retail markets. Another wholesaler of eggs, on a condition of anonymity, said that the prices of eggs are very volatile. “There are many factors that effects the prices.
Apart from festive season, the prices are also affected when prices of vegetable vary. If vegetables are reasonably priced, the demand for eggs goes down and vice versa. The prices are also affected if there is drop in supply,” he said. He said that the recent fall in the prices is a kind of small correction. “Some of the suppliers had joined hands and raised the prices during Navratra when the demand was very low. We will see the actual demand in November and December when large number of people eat eggs,” he said. The wholesaler further added that the enough quantity of eggs are being supplied to the city from various parts of Telangana.
