THE local supplies of vegetables have started arriving in the Mahatma Phule vegetable wholesale market popularly known as Cotton Market. With the start of local supplies the prices of vegetables have cooled down from the past week. “The prices of vegetables have dropped by 10 per cent to 15 per cent from their highs as local supplies have started arriving in the wholesale market,” said Ram Mahajan, Secretary of Mahatma Phule Sabji Wa Phur Adatiya Association while talking to The Hitavada. He said that this year there has been ample rains due to which there will be good harvest season. Due to delayed rains the supply of new produce is late by 15 days.
Normally the sowing takes place during the month of June. But due to delayed rains most of the sowing took place in July this year. The vegetable prices being quoted a the Mahatma Phule vegetable market are as follows: Brinjal at Rs 8 per kilo to Rs 10 per kilo, Cauliflower at Rs 10 per kilo to Rs 12 per kilo, cabbage at Rs 10 per kilo, tomato at Rs 25 to Rs 30 per kilo, green chillies at Rs 20 to Rs 25 per kilo, coriander leaves at Rs 60 per kilo, bitter gourd at Rs 30 per kilo, pumpkin at Rs 25 per kilo to Rs 30 per kilo, cucumber at Rs 15 per kilo, carrot at Rs 25 per kilo, lawki at Rs 15 per kilo, capsicum at Rs 30 per kilo, beans at Rs 50 to Rs 60 per kilo and cluster beans at Rs 30 per kilo.
The supply of the local produce will arrive in large quantities after Diwali. At that time there will be a further correction in the vegetable prices from the current levels. About 80 to 100 small and medium vehicles are unloading the local produce at the Mahatma Phule vegetable market. This number will shoot up to 150 to 200 vehicles. Most the local produce is supplied from villages and small towns within a radius of 40 kilometres of Nagpur, he said.
