Banking operations paralysed as employees join one-day strike

ALL INDIA Bank Employees Association (AIBEA) and Bank Employees Federation of India (BEFI), the two largest employeesunions inpublicsectorbanks jointly called for one-day token strike Tuesday. The unions condemned the merger of 10 public sector banks into 4 so-called big banks and in supportoftheirvariousdemands and issues. More than 5 lakh employeesalloverIndia,belonging to AIBEA and BEFI stopped their work. The above strike is at theindustry levelandnotatbank level issue. Besides, the merger issue, the bank unions are protesting against banking reforms and no stepsbeing initiatedforrecovery of bad loans, action against defaulters.
Their other demands include, no harassment of customers with penal charges, no hike in service charges and increase in deposit rates. Since observance of Code of Conduct in the State of Maharashtraonaccountofongoing
Assembly election,the members of the under the twin banner of AIBEA and EFI organised a salient protest demonstration before Bank of India, Kingsway, Nagpur. The demonstration was conducted by Jaiwant Gurway, General Secretary of EMBEA. He explained anti-workers policies of Government.
“The attention of the general public is diverted from the basic economic and national issues,” hesaid.Gurwaysaid,duetostrike, transactionsworthRs 2200 crore was stuck up in Vidarbha. More than 700 members belongingtotheaforesaidunions registeredtheirpresenceandparticipated in demonstration. Suresh Bobhate, President of EMBEA addressed the gathering and asked the members to show solidarity against anti-workers andanti-customer’spoliciesofthe Government. He also spoke at lengthabouttheilleffectofmerger and Banking Regulation Act, polices ushered in by the Governmenttofacilitateandprotect only the big corporate houses. He stressedtheneedforframing norms for early recovery of bad and stressed loan so thatthe commonman’smoneyissafeand banking as a whole can be strengthened. Onthisoccasion,YugalRayulu complementedthebankemployees for their trans unity against the repressive and oppressive policies of the Government. He said that it was only because of the unity of AIBEA and BEFIthat the privatisation ofthe nationalized banks could be stalled.
He calledupontheagitatingemployees to get connected with the common man so that they also understand the real core issue. V V Assai, General Secretary of BEFI while addressing gathering warned them of the grave situation ahead and requested to be united to fight the move of the present government. Anil Kaparia, Chairman of AIBOC Maharashtra Zone also spoke on the occasion. The demonstration was led by Jaiwant Gurway, General Secretary,EMBEA,MilindWasnik, Chendil Iyer and Anjali Rana. LPNandanwar,PrabhatKokas, Pradeep Gour,RPRao, Shrikrishna Chendke, Narendra Bhujade, Ashok Shende, Ramkrishna Roy, Sujata Gedam, Narayan Umredkar, Sunil Belkode, Lalit Uppase, Virendra Gedam, Narendra Rudani, Pramod Meshram, Mayuresh Ghanghare, Rakesh Bangale, Vinod Zode, Nilesh Kinkar, SupriyaThakur,PankajGajbhiye, Rakesh Mahule, Praveen Sahare, Seema Ramtake, Anuja Bele and others were present. K.JagadeeshanofAllIndiaBank Retirees Federation, Nagpur Forum along with Chelwani also greetedthemembersandextended their support.
