The new Mayor and Deputy Mayor of the city will be elected on November 22. Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) administration prepared draft of the programme and forwarded the same to Divisional Commissioner for approval. According to officials in the know of things, the present Mayor Nanda Jichkar and Deputy Mayor Deepraj Pardikar had got extension of three months owing to engagement of Government machinery in conduct of State Legislative Assembly elections.
The extension ends on November 21. Hence, the election of new Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be held on November 22. The process of nominations for the posts of Mayor and Deputy Mayor will be conducted on November 18, between 11 am and 3 pm. The elections will be held on November 22 at Town Hall. The candidates who file nomination papers for these posts will be allowed to withdraw from the fray before the conduct of elections. The post of Mayor is reserved for General category. For the post of Deputy Mayor, there is no reservation. With the thumping majority that the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has got in NMC house, it will have the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor both.
With the post getting reserved for General category candidate, Sandip Joshi is the front-runner for the coveted post of Mayor. At present, Joshi is Ruling Party Leader. There are total 66 corporators who got elected from seats reserved for General category. Apart from Joshi, other contenders for the top post include senior corporator Dayashankar Tiwari, Sanjay Bangale, and Chetana Tank. Meanwhile, NMC administration has started preparing for bye-election from Prabhag No 12-D.
The administration has divided the voters’ list for Prabhag No 12-D. Jagdish Gwalbansi of BJP was the corporator from Prabhag No 12-D. However, he passed in April earlier this year. State Election Commission has asked NMC to finalise voters’ list for bye-election from this seat. Abhijit Bangar, Municipal Commissioner, has appealed to the people to see the draft electoral rolls available at Dharampeth Zone Office No 2 in Gokulpeth from November 15 to November 22, and file objections/suggestions, if any, till November 22.
