The outgoing Mayor Nanda Jichkar expressed satisfaction over her two-and-a-half years tenure at the helm of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) as many development works could be successfully completed despite so many constraints. “At the time of taking over the charge in March 2017, the situation on financial front was quite grim, but thanks to support from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Guardian Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule all hurdles were successfully negotiated. Even, the receipt of Goods and Service Tax (GST) grant from State Government ensured that financial health of NMC was stabilised,” Jichkar said at an interaction with mediapersons on the last day of her office as Mayor, on Thursday. Jichkar will relinquish the post as election to elect her successor is scheduled during the special meeting of NMC House on Friday. Jichkar specially highlighted launching of Mayor Innovation Awards and setting-up of Mayor Innovation Council as one major step in stimulating research and innovation among youth.

They also propelled Nagpur to global seat and became a benchmark for other corporations in country. Also these two initiatives ensured many job opportunities for youth in city. While taking over as Mayor there were many challenges before NMC but with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government at national and state level ensured that all problems on financial front were resolved in jiffy. Constant support from party leadership and corporators and leaders of city unit of BJP ensured a smooth term, Jichkar mentioned further.

Many projects could be launched for citizens like solar energy, e-charging stations, introduction of electric buses, and also issue of bio-diversity was also taken-up by NMC. During the two-and half years tenure being a woman was never a disadvantage. The signing of agreement with Tata Trust is another milestone achievement for NMC and it would upgrade health services in city. Deputy Mayor Deepraj Pardikar, Sandeep Joshi, current ruling party leader and who is slated to take over as next Mayor of Nagpur city, Dharampal Meshram, Chairpersons, Legal Committee, Sunil Agrawal, senior corporator, also were present during the media interaction.
