NAGPUR will soon emerge as the manufacturing hub of innovative, affordable and quality medicines with 12 pharmaceutical companies starting operations at ‘The Drug Park’ in Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN). The companies which have been allotted land in MIHAN include Lupin, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Indo UK Institute of Health, Suraj Eyecare, Essem Compliance, Zim Laboratories, Arco Life Sciences, Glowide Pharma, Pharmacheck, Nubeno Pharma, Divya Pharmacy and S K Logistics. “The pharmaceutical companies will soon start operations at MIHAN drugs park as the Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) has allocated land to 12 pharma companies and medical institutions for developing bulk drugs, formulations and medical devices,” stated a report by AIDAN (All India Drug Action Network) through e-pharmail on Thursday.

This is subsequent to MADC having signed proposals with the companies who wish to operate in Green or non-polluting category. Environmental clearance on the same was received a year back. “Lupin has already started its production from MIHAN SEZ along with All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on 150 acres of land. Besides this, Indo-UK Institute of Health in association with King’s College, London, has procured 153 acres of land in SEZ for setting up a health city to promote medical tourism in India,” the report stated. Six acres of land has been allocated to city-based Zim Laboratories, Suraj Eyecare being allocated four acres, 2.5 acres to Essem Compliance, two acres to Arco Life Sciences, four acres to Nubeno Pharma and 36 acres to Divya Pharmacy.

Talking to ‘The Hitavada’, Dr Anwar S Daud, Chairman and Managing Director of ZIM Laboratories, said, “The company has been planning to develop an ultramodern pharmaceutical manufacturing plant to produce affordable generic medicines having export potential. ZIM is well recognised Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Company for making quality healthcare affordable through drug delivery solutions focusing on patient convenience and adherence. The modern plant will manufacture complex generic molecules, novel innovative products needed in global market, nano medicines etc.”

The AIDAN report stated, “Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Dr Pallavi Darade who had been assigned to facilitate manufacturers with modalities related to the bulk drugs park had stated that the ecosystem in MIHAN has motivated new companies to set up bulk drug and medical device park based on the letters of intent from the concerned manufacturers.” In the past, Maharashtra FDA and pharmaceutical companies at Nashik, Pune, Aurangabad and Thane held several meetings to explore investment opportunities in MIHAN. Last year, MIHAN management team gave a presentation on the modalities of setting up a bulk drugs park, implementation of guidelines, approvals and clearances required for the companies for setting up the units, it was learnt.
