Aditi Tatkare, the daughter of Raigad MP and senior Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Sunil Tatkare, is part of the younger generation leaders who are groomed for future challenges in Maharashtra politics. Aditi made her electoral debut in a constituency nurtured by her father for two terms and now people of Shrivardhan of Raigad district elected her for better development.

The 28-year-old defeated Vinod Ghosalkar, a former MLA of the Shiv Sena by a margin of 40,000 votes in the election from that constituency where there are more women voters than men. Excerpts of a chat with her: Your take on representation of new generation leaders in Maharashtra Politics. Each and every representative of my age needs to be very honest with their positions because at the end of the day it is they who have to represent their constituency. Role of young generation in politics is need of the hour and youth of my age should come forward and take this responsibility for better future of our country. I know the expectations are high. I will ensure that every single of these expectations is fulfilled.

Your take on women’s representation in State Politics? It is good thing that women in India is now actively participating in politics. Central and State Governments are also encouraging women to come in the political limelight. However, putting forward our opinion confidently and strongly in the house is also needed and every woman in the house should ask questions. Many opposition leaders accuses you of nepotism. How you refute such accusations? I have been actively working with NCP for the last 10 years, from the Rashtrawadi Yuvati Congress to the local unit. Only those who do not know me accuse me of nepotism. What issues you will raise during your tenure from your constituency?

I am pitching my vision of development for the region. I want better roads, the tourism industry to grow, women empowerment, women safety, job opportunities, development of fishery sector, farmers issues and environment-friendly businesses to come to Shrivardhan. How much it is challenging for you to have a family political background? When you contest an election, obviously it’s seen which family you belong to. My father has been in politics for more than 35 years. He was also involved in national level politics. When I contested election, 90% people saw it as his daughter and how I could match to the kind of work that he is being doing. But, once you’re elected for the next five years it is upto you how and what kind of work you do for your constituency.
