TWO days after Jehangirabad police seized Rs 2.5 lakh of unaccounted cash from a servant of a businessman followed by recovery of Rs 7 lakh by Gautam Nagar cops from a car during a vehicle checking drive, speculations are rife that political leaders are transferring money to their aides ahead of the elections. After model code of conduct was enforced following declaration of dates for Lok Sabha polls, on directives of Election Commission of India in order to control illegal transportation of money, liquor and freebies, Special Forces have been deployed at several check posts on entry and exit points of the State capital. “After money was seized in different parts of the city in the past couple of days, we decided to check every single vehicle passing through the check posts at outer places and inside the city,” said DIG Irshad Wali.

Some places where check posts have been put are 11 Meel Misrod, Phanda toll plaza (main entrance), Parwaliya border, Sukhisewania and JP Tiraha. Talking about how officials function during these drives during model code of conduct, the police officer said that on-duty official be it a Law and Order (L&O) official, FST/SST, Special Police Force (SPF) official or a traffic police official, they alert the control room through wireless when they come across any suspicious activity. If he is unable to stop the vehicle at the check post for some reason, he sends a message with vehicles’ particulars to the next check post. Besides this, action is taken against vehicles in which political party posts or signs were inscribed on the registration number plates. Police also penalised vehicles on which additional focus lamps have been installed. ASP Traffic Pradeep Singh Chouhan said that inside city check points were set up at Board Office Square, Alpana Trisection, Prabhat Square, Piplani Trisection, Jawahar Chowk crossing, Roshanpura Square, Polytechnic Square and Chunabhatti.

Under Section 185/4 of Motor Vehicle Act, a penalty of Rs 3000 could be imposed on the vehicle. He said that 488 traffic violators were penalised on Sunday including 39 for wrong number plate, 8 for using additional search light and 20 violators for drink and driving and using earphones while driving. Through ITMS system, 61 people were penalised for jumping red signal and 254 for riding vehicle sans helmet. Police have requested people to inform them about any illegal activity that they come across by dialling 100 or calling 0755-2677340 to traffic police.
