Sanjay Bahe, a 21-year-old youth from Balaghat got a new lease of life after Dr Pramod Giri, a noted Neurosurgeon from Nagpur, removed a long iron rod that pierced his head. Dr Giri along with his team performed procedure that lasted for one-and-a-half hours and removed the rod. Sanjay, while doing some repair work at a construction site fell in a well. While falling down, a rod in the well pierced his head. The rod pierced from the right temporal region of his brain to the left frontal region across the midline. It was a serious injury but Sanjay was conscious and oriented. He was taken to Gondia’s B J Hospital, where Dr Vikas Jain examined him.

Dr Jain provided him first aid but he realised that the patient needed to be taken to a neurosurgeon. Accordingly, Sanjay was brought to Neuron Hospital where Dr Giri examined him. Sanjay was in hypotension and crucial. He was resuscitated with blood, blood products and was taken for surgery after full preparation. The operation was performed for one-and-a-half hours and the rod was removed safely after craniotomy. There was hardly any bleeding or injury to surrounding structure.

Main venous channel i.e. Superior Sagittal Sinus was preserved by millimeters. As the rod pierced Sanjay’s head, the main challenge before the doctors was not to disturb the system of this vital organ while removing the rod. Dr Pramod Giri ,while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, said, “Giving anaesthesia to the patient in such cases is also difficult. We did right from positioning for intubation to proper vital maintenance intraoperatively.” “With previous experiences of mine with similar surgeries (two knife injuries, two steel rods and one bomb shell injuries), I performed the surgery with all caution so that damage to the surrounding structures shouldn’t happen. One complication can take place in such cases it is of causing meningitis to patient. Fortunately, he is doing fine after the surgery. We are also taking care to prevent meningitis,” informed Dr Giri. A team of doctors that helped Dr Giri in making the surgery successful included Dr Shivaji Deshmukh, Anesthetist; Dr Yogesh Deshmukh, Orthopedics; Dr Kanhaya Chandak, General Surgeon; Dr Sushant Adman, Intensivist; Dr Tushar Yelne, Intensivist.
