The paver blocks removed for cable laying works have been dumped in a haphazard manner on footpath along South Ambazari Road by the authorities concerned

When road concretisation started it was told by the authorities that the structure would be permanent and nothing would be damaged as everything will be done pre-planned. Contrary to it, the authorities removed the paver blocks on the road between Kriplani chowk to Deekshabhoomi Square (South Ambazari Road) and left them to their fate. The complete belt has become a dangerous spot as the blocks are lying around in a haphazard manner.

The board clearly indicates which agency is doing the work. (Right) Boards of various agencies, bundles of large cables have been kept on the footpath posing a risk to the pedestrians and motorists. With such a shoddy and careless execution of work, one wonders if Nagpur is really becoming a ‘smart’ city. (Pics by Satish Raut)

The road between Kriplani Square and Deekshabhoomi Square was constructed a year ago. It was well-constructed four lane road being used by commuters at large numbers. The road has important offices and schools. It has Industrial Training Institute (ITI), The Blind Relief Association Nagpur English School, office of Deputy Director (Public Health), Kurvey’s New Model School, office of Vidarbha Statutory Development Board, office of Social Justice Department, tribal hostel and some residential apartments. Construction of the road took a lot of time as authorities wanted to do some cable laying work inside it so that no need would arise of digging the road. Suddenly a number of labourers, some machine arrived at the scene and started digging the footpaths, the boards of various agencies became visible. The labourers dug paver blocks and left the work halfway. People at first thought that the work would be completed soon and the condition of the road would become as it is.

It did not happen. What remained on the road along with paver blocks is the boards of various agencies which are doing the digging work. The boards that are on display say ‘Work in Progress Nagpur Metro Rail Project (Telecommunication Systems)’, ‘Nagpur Smart City Project’, ‘Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Police’. Whosoever the agency may be, it should have done the work properly. Now, if they have started the work, they must ensure that at the end of the day everything should be put in place and make road free for the pedestrians. Lying of paver blocks can invite any kind of accident for which the authorities would be held responsible. Will the authority take some measures to mend the things is the question being asked by the cautious citizens.
