Business Bureau:
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized betel nuts worth Rs 20 crore that was being illegally brought to the city from Indonesia. It is for the first time that the team of DRI has seized about 500 metric tonne betel nuts from a godown located in Kalamna area. According to the sources, the DRI officers have arrested more than 20 persons in this connection while interrogated many others.
The sources also said that the DRI officers were keeping an eye on many other local dealers suspecting their involvement in the incident. It is being believed that the DRI officers would take some more persons into custody for further investigation in coming days.
The seized material was of sub standard quality. Betel nuts are available in Indonesia at a very reasonable prices and thus huge quantity of the commodity is being brought in here in local markets. But interestingly, one has to pay 108 per cent custom duty. And thus anti-social elements indulge in illegally importing the commodity. Nagpur is a very big market for betel nuts. Such illegal movement of betel nuts were foiled by the DRI officers in recent past.
