City to go without water supply on 17th, 19th, 21st
   Date :16-Jul-2019

Finally, inadequate rains have forced civic authorities to stop water supply though for three days for this week. While addressing the mediapersons, Sandip Joshi, Ruling Party Leader in Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), called it as unfortunate but unavoidable decision. There will be no water supply on Wednesday - July 17; Friday - July 19 and Sunday - July 21. The decision was taken in a meeting that was attended by Joshi, Chairman of Water Works Committee Pintu Jhalke, Mayor Nanda Jichkar and Standing Committee Chairman Pradip Pohane.

Joshi informed the mediapersons that the decision was conveyed to Chief Minister of Maharashtra Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister Nitin Gadkari. Tanaji Wanve, Leader of Opposition in the House, too, was taken into confidence, said Joshi. Joshi said, “In the 17 year rule of Bharatiya Janata Party, this decision is being taken for the first time where citizens would get water supply on alternate days. We are endeavoring that this situation should not persist for long. We did this arrangement for this week only. If it rains adequately and water level goes up, then we will rethink and the supply would be restored on regular basis.” If the situation of inconsistent or inadequate rain exists in next week, too, then top brass of NMC will sit together on next Monday and new plan will be formulated to deal with the condition.

The rainfall in Navegaon Khairi and Totladoh was less as compared to last year. Water is not being reaching in Pench 1, 2, 3 due to the lack of pressure causing filling of water tanks in the city. There is some water in Kanhan which needs to be lifted otherwise it would flow. This water can be supplied to four zones viz Nehrunagar, Lakadganj, Asinagar and Satranjipura. Those present in the press conference were Deputy Mayor Deepraj Pardikar, Whip Divya Dhurde, Additional Commissioner Ram Joshi, Executive Engineer of Water Works Shweta Banerjee.

Gravity of water stock

Due to less rain, this year Totladoh reservoir, the biggest dam of the region is having zero stock indicating the gravity of the water scarcity. The drinking water supply to Nagpur city is mainly dependent on Totladoh. Government has allowed to take 30 MM3 so there was enough water in the reservoir till Monday, July 15. There was a ray of hope that heavy rain would resolve the issue. But with no rains in the last eight days have made situation worst with Totladoh and Navegaon Khairi dried completely. The water of the dead stock that was pulled from the Totladoh, too, got consumed.
