President of India Ram Nath Kovind has appointed Ramesh Bais, former Union Minister and seven times Member of Parliament from Raipur, as the Governor of Tripura. On being appointed as the Governor of Tripura, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Ramesh Bais has extended his gratitude towards President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for giving him the new responsibility. In his brisk reaction to the development, Bais said that he would contribute to the development of Tripura and do his level best to maintain peace and tranquility in State. The President of India apart from appointing Bais as Governor of Tripura, has transferred MP Governor Anandiben Patel and appointed her as Governor of Uttar Pradesh. Similarly, Bihar Governor Lal Ji Tandon has been transferred and appointed as Governor of Madhya Pradesh.
The President also appointed Jagdeep Dhankhar as Governor of West Bengal, Phagu Chauhan as Governor of Bihar and R N Ravi as Governor of Nagaland. Ramesh Bais, who had represented Raipur Lok Sabha constituency for a long time, was denied party ticket for the recently held elections for 17th Lok Sabha and Sunil Soni was fielded in his place. However, Bais while holding patience carried out his regular political activities and campaigned actively for party candidates in Raipur and Durg Lok Sabha constituencies and ensuring that in both Lok Sabha constituencies the party candidates win with a huge margin. His patience and perseverance was evenly compensated by the central party leadership by appointing him as the Governor of Tripura.
Ramesh Bais was first elected to Raipur Municipal Corporation as Corporator in 1978 and thereafter elected twice to erstwhile Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly, twice in 1980 and 1984. Bais was elected for the first time from Raipur constituency in 1989 for ninth Lok Sabha. Thereafter he was elected consecutively six times for 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 15th and 16th Lok Sabha. He has executed his duties as Union Minister of State, Steel and Mines (Mar 1998 - Oct 1999); Union Minister of State, Chemicals and Fertilizers (Oct 1999 - Sep 2000); Union Minister of State, Information and Broadcasting (Sep 2000 - Jan 2003); Union Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Mines (Jan. 2003 - Jan 2004) and Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Ministry of Environment & Forests (Jan 2004 - May 2004). The Chhattisgarh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party has also expressed its happiness with the appointment while stating that a son of the soil has been given opportunity and termed the development as prestigious for Chhattisgarh. His long political and administrative experience will be beneficial for the party as well as the people of Tripura.
