Considering the need for more seats of Post Graduate (PG) Medical courses in State, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS) has come up with an idea of starting PG courses in co-ordination with Department of Public Health. This was thought only for the District Hospital in Nashik. Now, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis wants to take this idea further. He wants to implement it in all such places in State. In the wake of eruption of issue of increasing reservation, the need arose for more and more PG seats. As per the rules of Medical Council of India (MCI), every single seat is connected to hospital, number of beds and ratio of teacher. If there is no Medical College, then it becomes difficult to run the courses, if MCI rules are to be followed meticulously.
Two years ago a committee under the Chairmanship of Dr Vedprakash Mishra had chalked out the plan where sans hospital medical college could be run. Like this MUHS scheme, that plan too had talked about tying up with Public Health Department. While disclosing the details, Dr Dileep Mhaisekar said, “The initiative was taken by Medical Education Minister Girish Mahajan and he pursued it. The college is being opened with the cooperation of Eknath Shinde who is Public Health Minister.
We were taking efforts to start PG courses in our University. But due to the patronage by Ministers it got momentum. Now this will increase PG seats and students will be the ultimate beneficiaries.” Dr Kalidas Chavan, Registrar elaborated, “Medical Education Ministry will take the responsibility of all the expenditures of academic activities. Dean will look after the fees amount, receipt of Government fund. We are also planning to start DNB course.”
Dr Mohan Khamgaonkar, Pro-Vice Chancellor informed, “As every University has its PG departments, MUHS too was planning to have their own. We were supported by both the ministers in our efforts. This can become a model for State where Public Health Ministry and Medical Education Ministry have joined hands.” Impressed by this initiative Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has decided to do it in all such places where Medical Hospital is absent in State. A meeting soon will be held in that regard where a proper plan would be prepared.
