Heavy downpour results in opening of 15 gates of Bargi dam

Total 15 spillway gates of Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Pariyojana, Bargi Dam were opened due to increasing inflow. Following the heavy down pour on the upstream of river Narmada, water inflow was increased upto 1,014 cumec which leads to increasing level of the reservoir upto 421.60 metres against the peak height of 422.76 metre, on Wednesday 9 pm. Pointing out the heavy inflow, dam authority increased the water discharging of 3,450 cumec/1,21,837 cusec to maintain average level of the reservoir.
 
It may be mentioned that the water discharging was carried out from opening height of 0.5 metre of four spillway gates till Tuesday. Incessant rains on the upstream of river Narmada increased the water inflow and water discharging was increased upto 750 cumec on Wednesday, 6 pm. Executive Engineer of Bargi Dam, Ajay Sure informed that rapidly increasing inflow of water suddenly rouse the level of the reservoir upto 421.60 metres.
 
Taking a serious note on rising water level, 15 of the 21 spillway gates of Bargi Dam were opened upto 1.50-metre opening height for water discharging 3,450 cumec from the reservoir. Water discharging may be increased or decreased after reviewing the downpour in catchment areas of river Narmada. Along with the water discharging from the gates of reservoir, the hydel power station of Madhya Pradesh State Electricity Board (MPSEB) was operating on its full load capacity of 90 MW. Water discharging from the hydel power project and two canals was being carried out upto 233 cumec. Collectors, Superintendents of Police and other concerned departments of Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Raisen, Hoshangabad, Sihore, Dewas, Harda, Khargon, Khandwa district were informed for ensuring the implementation of necessary safety measures at banks of the river. Besides this, alert sirens were blown at the banks of river at Gwarighat, Lamhetaghat and Bhedaghat in Jabalpur to alert the residents.
