Command Control Centre of City Police to come up shortly

OF THE 3,647 surveillance cameras commissioned by Nagpur Smart and Sustainable City Development Corporation Limited (NSSCDCL) at 660 locations across the city, including Kamptee, 209 are non-functional owing to ongoing Metro Rail project work, construction of cement roads and flyovers. NSSCDCL authorities maintained that these cameras would be operational as soon as the ongoing project works were completed. More and more demands for installation of surveillance cameras in other locations in the Second Capital are pouring in, they added. Under the Rs 520 crore Smart City Project being implemented by NSSCDCL, 3,800 CCTV cameras were to be installed by Larsen & Toubro for city-wide surveillance, improved response time and post-incident management, crime prevention and detection, traffic and crowd management.

Using the footage of the surveillance cameras, automatic number plate recognition facility helped police to identity the traffic offenders and detect serious crimes. The system also includes face recognition facility. NSSCDCL authorities are putting in efforts to technologically improve the city-wide surveillance system, which proved to be a boon for effective traffic management and crime prevention and detection, so as to automatically generate e-challans of violators of traffic rules.

This would ease the workload of Traffic Police at Honourable Atal Behari Vajpayee City Operation Centre at the New Administrative Building of Nagpur Municipal Corporation who monitor footage of 3,465 surveillance cameras. As per information, police have so far issued e-challans to more than 26,000 traffic offenders for jumping signals, stop-line violation, riding two-wheelers without headgear, riding triple seat, driving wrong side and parking vehicles in No-Parking Zones. Similarly, city police have detected 475 crime cases including murder and street crimes, and also the cases of road accidents using footage of CCTV cameras between January 1, 2019 to June 30, 2019.

The ongoing work of the proposed independent state-of-the-art Command Control Centre (CCC) for Nagpur City Police in front of Police Control Room is expected to be completed in coming few months. It would be established as a part of city surveillance solution. Maharashtra Government has sanctioned more than Rs 12.57 crore for the CCC. The building construction work is under way on a plot admeasuring 10,165.47 square metres sanctioned by the District Collector. The three-storeyed building housing the CCC would include surveillance area, server room, panel room, and cabins on the ground floor and war room and cabin room, store rooms and pantry would be on third floor. Under the Smart City project, the public address system has been installed at different locations. Drone-based surveillance gadgets and mobile surveillance vehicle have already been received by the city police.
