Need to protect Ozone Layer to save Earth

On the occasion of 32nd International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer, people should take oath of ensuring their contribution in the global campaign by minimizing the use of air-conditioners for protection of planet earth

Global campaign for protection of Ozone Layer is being accepted and being participated wholeheartedly by humans to save the planet earth from global warming. Technological advancements under Montreal Protocol and increasing public awareness universally restrained the use of substances that deplete the Ozone Layer. It may be noted that the secretion of super greenhouse gasses on earth depleting the Ozone Layer. A study carried out in late 70s proved that the Ozone Layer, which is protecting the earth from harmful Sun’s Ultra Violet (UV) radiation, was estimated to be collapsed by the year 2050. The study stated that elimination of Ozone Layer will increase skin cancer and cause natural disasters due to climate change and global warming.

Senior Scientist of Tropical Forest Research Institute, Dr Avinash Jain, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’, informed that in order to protect the Ozone Layer, Montreal Protocol was signed between 197 countries, in the year 1987, to check the secretion of harmful gasses on earth. Ozone Layer is just like a shield to protect earth from sun’s ultraviolet radiation. In year 1985, scientists found a big hole in Ozone Layer. Soon after, researchers identified around 100 ozone-depleting chemicals. Then 197 countries signed Montreal Protocol for checking the use of such harmful chemicals to check greenhouse gases emission on earth.

One of the harmful chemicals named Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) commonly used in refrigerators and air-conditions is one of the major causes of depleting Ozone Layer majorly in China and India. Dr Jain informed that here is good news that amidst rigorous researches and technological advancements has changed the entire scenario and Ozone Layer is being restored and expected to be recovered by 2050. He added that technological upgradations and rigorous plantation has improved the situation but it will take a long time to achieve the ultimate task. On the occasion of 32nd International Day for Preservation of Ozone Layer, people should take oath of ensuring their contribution in the global campaign by minimizing the use of air-conditioners for protection of planet earth.
