NEW SYMBOLISM
   Date :18-Sep-2019

PRIME Minister Mr. Narendra Modi worshipping the mighty Narmda on the occasion of his birth day presents a new symbolism. The symbolism is not only for the Government but also for every citizen of this nation. This is a message to the nation that future calls for worshipping now dwindling water resources, preserving them for present and future generations. While population is growing at a steady pace there is need for preserving existing sources of water and looking for newer resources to meet the growing demand for drinking purposes, industrial use and agricultural requirements. The looming danger of global warming has put before humanity newer questions as far as water availability is concerned. With weather pattern becoming erratic water availability would pose a big challenge for mankind. It is therefore necessary to plan for the future and use available stocks in a judicious manner. Already several areas in our country are becoming water-scarce. The Prime Minister has recently given a call to the countrymen to take steps for water conservation.

RULE OF FIXERS

THE scourge of match-fixing refuses to go from cricket. Despite life bans and career-threatening punishments meted out to culprits indulging in the immoral activity, new links continue to emerge from the dark world of dirty monies. The approaches reported by players in the Tamil Nadu Premier League and a member of women’s national team further point to the dingy net of fixers operating in sports. Lack of material evidence provides the biggest thrust to the business of fixing, for, there is no trail of exchanges nor there is any concrete paper work to prove wrongdoings. This lacuna has been exploited by the sporting underworld which has spread its tentacles till local leagues. Monitoring is one part of fighting the problem, yet absence of stringent laws to deal with the culprits acts as a hurdle in furthering probe in such matters. The only positive from the recent episodes is the willingness of players to inform the anti-corruption unit about approaches by fixers. Perhaps, a legislation at par with dealing economic offenses may act as a deterrent.
