DOCTORS at Aureus Hospital successfully performed central India’s first stem cell transplant. After proper treatment for 9 months the patient, Ujwala Bari, 43 years old from Wardha was cured and discharged from the hospital on Thursday, said Dr Lalit Raut, Haematologist/ Haematooncologist Stem Cell Transplant Physician while addressing a press conference.

Dr Nirmal Patle and Dr Ashish Ganjre were also present. Dr Raut said that the hospital has ideal infrastructure and isolation room to perform advanced bone marrow transplant to eradicate cancer. He said that the best way to describe this treatment is a hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HSCT). Hematopoietic refers to the body’s ability to make the cells of one bloodstream red blood cells that carry oxygen, platelets that help clotting and white blood cells that help fight infection. In most cases, a patient has a problem that would benefit from replacing their blood system with someone else’s (donor).

Hematopoietic (blood making) stem cells are given or transfused into a patient. Over time, these grow into a mature blood system. There are various types of HSCT like allogeneic, autogous and syngeneic, he added.
