Nagpur registers 100th kidney donation, retrieval

Starting with the first kidney donation and transplantation at Nagpur on April 4, 2013, Nagpur conducted 100th and 101st kidney donations on Sunday. It was 58th organ donation and retrieval at New Era Hospital as Wasudev Hiraman Zode, a retired engineer of Public Works Department, was declared brain dead and his family donated his organs that would give new lease of life to others. Wasudeo Hiraman Zode, Ward No 7, Chichgad Road, Deori, Gondia was admitted at New Era hospital, Lakadganj with massive intracerebral bleeding with coagulopathy disorder. Doctors tried their best to save him but could not. Later he was declared brain dead by team of doctors.
 
The family was counselled by Dr Vivek Lanje for organ donation. Wife of Zode, Lalita and son Avinash readily agreed and gave written consent. Doctors tried for the organs that could be retrieved and transplanted in other patients. But liver was not suitable for transplant, hence kidneys and cornea were donated. Team of doctors swung into action and information was passed on to Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee (ZTCC). Guidance was provided by ZTCC Nagpur President Dr Vibhavari Dani, Secretary Dr Ravi Wankhede, Dr V L Gupta (Vice-President), Dr Charusheela Bawankule (Joint Secretary), Vijay Kadwe (Treasurer), Dr Sudhir Gupta, (State Appellant Authority Representative), ex-members: Dr Mukund Deshpande, Dr Vijay Shrotey, Dr S J Acharya, Dr Sanjay Kolte, Dr P K Deshpande. Retrieval and Transplantation were coordinated by Nagpur Zone coordinator Veena Wathore.
 
Accordingly one kidney was given to a 40-year-old male in New Era Hospital while other one was sent to Meditrina Hospital. Corneas were sent to Dr Mahatme Eye Hospital. A team of doctors including Neurosurgeon Dr Nilesh Agrawal, Neurophysian Dr Parag Moon, Intensivist Dr Amol Kokas, Anaesthetist Dr Sahil Bansal under the able guidance of New Era Hospital Director Dr Anand Sancheti, and Dr Nidhish Mishra declared the patient brain dead. Thereafter Transplant Physicians Dr Shivnarayan Acharya, and Dr Piyush Kimmatkar retrieved and transplanted the kidneys to New Era Hospital and Meditrina hospital’s wait-listed patients. Kidney 1: Retrieval and Transplant Team at New Era Hospital were Urosurgeon Dr Ravi Deshmukh, Dr Rohit Gupta, and Surgeon Dr Shabbir Raja, Anaesthetist Dr Sahil Bansal and Dr Sushant Gulghane.
 
Transplant Coordinator were Dr Ashwini Chaudhari and Shubham Raut. Kidney 2: Under the able guidance of Chairman-cum-Managing Director Dr Sameer Paltewar the Transplant team of Urosurgeons Dr Rajesh Soni and Dr Anagha Kulkarni, Dr Shivnarayan Acharya, and Dr Piyush Kimmatkar, Cardiovascular Surgeon Dr Sandeep Khanzode, Retrieval team members were Dr Deepak Madankar, Dr Sheetal Deshpande, Transplant coordinators were Dr Ashish Anwikar and Dr Ved Sarangpure. The Operational Manager was Dr Amrita Sharma.
