Chitrasen has become the first double leg amputee Indian to climb the mountain

Chitrasen Sahu from Chhattisgarh has become the first double leg amputee mountaineer from India to scale Mount Kilimanjaro the highest mountain peak of South Africa. Sahu give the message of plastic-free Chhattisgarh from the peak. Chitrasen said that he had undertaken the trek as part of a mission to promote inclusion and accessibility. The 5,685 metre high Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is among the world’s most popular treks for serious mountaineers. Climbing this dormant volcano means going through five extreme climate zones, certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Chitrasen, however, did it in six days, and enter history books as India’s first double leg amputee to do so. Chitrasen started his journey on September 19 at 1 pm and reached the peak on September 23 at 11 am. Before leaving for the trekking, Chitrasen had told media that he is doing this under Mission Inclusion, a campaign which aims to send a message to authorities and the disabled community at large.

Other objective was to encourage amputees to be proud of their prosthetic limbs under the campaign ‘Show Your Metal’. Chitrasen, on the trek, was accompanied by Rahul Gupta, an experienced mountaineer who has scaled Mount Everest. An assistant engineer in the Chhattisgarh Housing Board (CGEB), Chitrasen lost his both legs in an accident in 2014. Before this, he was a fulltime sportsperson and played cricket, basketball, etc.
