Nearly 75 participants from Jabalpur, Bhopal, Chattisgarh and other adjoining cities participated in the two-day workshop on ‘Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy: Scientific And Societal Applications (FTIR-SSA)’ which was concluded at St Aloysius College on Saturday. The two-day workshop conducted by Department of Chemistry, was sponsored by Department of Science and Technology, New Delhi. The inaugural function was attended by Professor J M Keller, acting Vice Chancellor, Rani Durgavati University as chief guest while Professor S S Sandhu, Vice-principal, St Aloysius, Dr Kallol Das, Dean of Life Sciences, Dr Anjali Dsouza were the special guests. Dr Manju Gupta, workshop convener, informed that the workshop was based on training on FT-IR instrument, microextraction methods, Soxhlet extraction, planar and column chromatography.
During two-day workshop, Prof J M Keller and Dr Rashmi Saxena, Department of Chemistry, MH College Home Science College talked about FTIR and basic principal of IR Spectroscopy. Dr S N Shukla from Science College informed about organic molecules which act as ligand and form complexes with metal ions to form intricate variety of complex compounds where FTIR also acts as a valuable tool in structure determination. Prof K K Verma, retired faculty, RDU, explained societal applications of FTIR and preparation of its samples by micro-extraction techniques.
During practical sessions, MSc. III Semester, Chemistry students demonstrated about working of FT-IR and other concepts. Retd Prof K K Mishra, RDU attended the valedictory function as chief guest while retired Prof K K Verma, Dr Rev G Vazhan Arasu, Dr Anjali Dsouza, Dean of Life Sciences were the special guests. Dr Anjali Dsouza read the workshop report while Dr Gupta distributed certificates among participants. Dr Smarika Lawrance, HoD Chemistry, Dr Sutapa Roy, Dr. Shweta Likhitkar and others contributed to make programme successful.
