“Education is a tool to chisel the mind to leave aside selfish motives and develop into a responsible citizen by understanding the corresponding duties along with the rights, to make the society better,” said Chief Justice of India Sharad Bobde while delivering 107th Convocation address of Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University on Saturday. Quoting some scientists and philosophers, Justice Bobde said after getting the degree, one should gain experience while working in the field of choice. More importantly, students should work for welfare of the society, he exhorted.

He was specific about uniting the society, which is divided and the gap is increasing. Justice Bobde was emotional initially, when he said that he has addressed several convocations in other universities. But this is my Alma Mater and named after Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj, who worked for bringing people together irrespective of caste, creed and religion. Education also should inculcate these qualities among the students. “Besides acquiring doctoral degree make habit of listening to others”, he added.

Today the important challenge is to educate the empoverished. Education is expected to empower the people without discrimination, Justice Bobde stated. He quoted Nelson Mandela, who has stated ‘Education is an important weapon for changing the world’, and appealed to the degree holders to think and use acquired knowledge for bringing about the positive change in the society. Justice Bobde also expressed concern over increasing commercialisation of education and said that there is need for re-orientation of teachers and students and march towards the basic goal of the society.
 
Vice-Chancellor Dr S P Kane presided over the Convocation. Pro-VC Dr Vinayak Deshpande, Officiating Registrar Dr Neeraj Khaty, Deans of all faculties and Management Council members were seated on the dais. Dr Sheehari Chava received the highest academic degree D Litt in the Faculty of Commerce and Management amidst loud applause.
 
Ayushi Sanjay Khandelwal received the highest seven gold medals. She was MBA student of Dr Ambedkar Institute of Management Studies and Research, Nagpur. Sayali Sandip Bhave, BALLB student of The University’s Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College, Main Branch was awarded six gold and a prize. Sakharam Ganpat Mandpe, an MA in Dr Ambedkar Thought student of the University also received six gold medals. Madhuri Narayan Ghuguskar, M Ed from the University’s Department of Education with five Gold Medals; Bharati Dnyaneshwar Shastri, M A (Marathi) from Madhukar Wasnik PWS College with four gold and a prize, and Mrunal Manoj Khobragade, Bachelor in Journalism from the University’s Department with three gold and two prizes received appreciations. Rachna Prakash Kanoujiya, MSc (Chemistry) from the University’s Department, who bagged four Gold and a Silver, could not attend the Convocation.
 
Jyoti Wadhwa received a special prize instituted by Dr Vitthalrao Jibhkate for acquiring PhD degree at the age of 66 years. One hundred meritorious students were given 158 Gold Medals, 9 Silver medals and 18 prizes. Dr Kane made introductory remarks and spoke about achievements of the University.
