Traffic Control Branch of Nagpur city police stepped-in to resolve the mess created by bizarre design of Sadar fly-over by putting in place new regulation on national highway stretch near Katurchand Park from Monday. The exercise though designed to avoid jams is however not without its faults as vehicles exiting on side of RBI are still heading straight into oncoming traffic coming from the LIC Square.
Shortcut Experts: The hell with regulation as citizens pull out all stops to adopt shortcut strategies to beat the traffic blues and take a U-turn on Sadar fly-over to reach LIC Square.
After multi agency discussion, cops barricaded the entire side in front of office of Military Engineering Service office and diverted traffic moving past RBI towards NIT T-point and from there towards LIC Square. The exercise was aimed at preventing mix-up between vehicles existing the newly built fly-over of NHAI and vehicular traffic heading towards LIC Square from RBI Square. Through this move while one of the fault was corrected chances of mishaps at the T-point at Kasturchand Park gate remain as it is.
The vehicles coming from Mankapur and Katol Road side now have direct access to move onto highway and then onto RBI Square but they are bound to clash with straight moving traffic on the road. The trouble was very much visible on Monday as traffic snarls continued to occur during intermittent period. The officers from various agencies had discussed other options but the one about putting traffic signal was shot down as it won’t be feasible as the stretch between LIC to RBI square is hardly 50 metres. NHAI would now put up speed breaker just after the landing to slow down the vehicle speed after they exit the fly-over.
Maha Metro too has removed the blocks between its pillars to provide direct connect with fly-over in a bid to ensure faster movement of vehicles. Similarly, for the vehicles moving from RBI for reaching LIC Square they have to take a circuitous route which again is a sore point and not of their making. One major problem that people faced is narrow width of road by side of Bishop Cotton School and in case if a bus gets parked then vehicular traffic on the entire lane is bound to get blocked. All in all the Sadar fly-over in process of solving traffic snarls on Residency Road, NHAI has ended-up providing an unwanted permanent black spot and new flash point that on highway stretch passing through city.
