With successful test, Jabalpur becomes the biggest artillery hub in the country

SUCCESSFUL proof-firing of indigenously developed ‘Sharang- 155/45’ gun system at Long Proof Range (LPR) Ordnance Factory Khamaria, 16 kilometers from Jabalpur district headquarters, made Jabalpur the biggest artillery hub in the country. Jabalpur is the only place in India where guns and its ammunitions are being manufactured, tested, validated and stored for the Indian Army. Sharang– 155mm/45calibre gun will be inducted in the Indian Army to strengthen its artillery power in western border of the country. “Starting proof-firing of high caliber guns at LPR Khamaria made Jabalpur an artillery hub of the country.
Proof firing in Jabalpur will not only save defence budget amounting in hundreds of crores and precious time but also give a boost to research and development works for developing more arms and ammunitions in ordnance factories”, said Hari Mohan, Chairman of Ordnance Factory Board, and Director General, Ordnance Factories. Chief of Ordnance Factories, Hari Mohan, talking to ‘The Hitavada’, disclosed that Sharang gun will be soon handed over to the armed forces during forthcoming Defence Expo in Lucknow (Uttar Pradesh) scheduled in February 2020.
Two Sharang guns, simultaneously developed at Gun Carriage Factory and Vehicle Factory Jabalpur were fielded for maiden proof firing at Long Proof Range (LPR), Khamaria. It was the first time when high caliber guns were deployed for proof firing in first time at LPR Khamaria. Proof-firing through 4x4 rounds from both the guns was carried out on 15-degree, 45-degree, 15-degree and 0-degree in presence of LPR and SQAE, Commandant, Brigadier Nishchaya Raut, Director General Quality Assurance , Commandant, Brigadier Ravi Bharadwaj, WDET, GCF, In-charge, Brigadier Jayant Kar and technical officers from GCF and VFJ.Sharang – 155 mm gun system has been indigenously developed on base of Soltam 130 mm Russian gun system at Gun Carriage Factory and Vehicle Factory Jabalpur in collaboration with Ordnance Devpt Centre, Kanpur and Ordnance Factory Kanpur.
