Identifying black spots and remedial measures thereon also result in drop in mishaps on Wardha road, Amravati road and Jabalpur road
Scientific analysis of mishaps and preventive measures helped the Traffic Police of Nagpur City to bring down soaring graph of road accidents on Ring Road by 44 per cent last year. The success also showcases pro-active approach of City Police machinery to ensure road safety of citizens. As per the statistics of Nagpur City Police, Ring Road was one of the most vulnerable roads in year 2018 with 137 road accidents out of total 1,117 accidents reported across the city.
Traffic police in collaboration with experts from Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) conducted scientific analysis of every accident in city and found out its causes. After the analysis, the police identified accidental spots and segregated them according to severity while few of them were labelled as Black Spots. Thereafter, corrective measures were carried out including rectifying road engineering, placing of barricades and marking Zebra crossings.
These measures bore fruits as accidents on Ring Road decreased by 61. Wardha road also become far safer for the vehicular traffic in 2019 as compared to 2018. A total of 77 road accidents were reported on Wardha road in year 2018 registering decline as 47 mishaps were reported in 2019. Along with these measures, increased awareness and strict law enforcement drives against rash drivers could also be reasons for decline in mishaps on city roads, said a Road Safety Expert. Jabalpur road also saw a declining trend in mishaps as compared to 66 road accidents recorded in the year 2018, during the year 2019 only 48 accidents occurred on the road. On Amravati road, accidents decreased by 16 as 56 mishaps took place in 2019 as compared to 72 in year 2018. Accidents on Chindwara Road also decreased to 45 from 54 in year 2019.
However, mishaps on Bhandara and Katol roads were increased last year. In 2018, 31 accidents were recorded on Bhandara road while 41 mishaps took place in 2019. Similarly, road accidents on Katol road also increased to 25 last year from 21 in year 2018. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Traffic Chinmay Pandit informed ‘The Hitavada’ that scientific analysis of the accidents was the main reason that showed results last year. “As per the study, a spot with more than 5 fatals or 10 accidents in a year was termed as Black Spot, while the road spot with 3 fatals in two years was named as Hot Spot.
A total of 40 Black Spots were identified on the Ring Road alone on the basis of analysis of road accidents in year 2018. As per the suggestions given by the team of VNIT and Police, concerned agency implemented remedial measures,” he said. Now, traffic police are continuously conducting analysis of accidents to ascertain reason behind sudden rise in mishaps on certain roads so as to make them safe for users, he informed further.
