RUSTY due to lack of match practise, Nagpur’s India Number 2 Malvika Bansod became an early casualty at the SaarLorLux Open Super 100 tournament under way at Saarbrucken in Germany. In her women’s singles opening round match played on Wednesday, Malvika lost to Kristin Kuuba of Estonia in straight games. The match lasted 34 minutes.

Playing her first match since the coronavirus-forced break, the 19-year-old Indian’s campaign ended as she went down 12-21, 19-21 to Kristin. Malvika, who had won back-to-back titles in senior circuit last year, was slow to start with. The more experienced 23-year-old Estonian opened up a big lead of 11-4 at the break and kept the momentum going to take the game.

Malvika pulled up her socks in the second game and was just one point behind at 10-11 during the change of ends. After the break, she grabbed five points in a row to take a slender two points lead at 17-15 but Kristin came back strongly to turn the table.
