Apart from lungs, novel coronavirus can also affect other parts of the body including kidney, pancreas and brain. All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Bhopal, conducted post-mortem on 10 corona bodies to be on familiar terms with the effect of the virus on different organs of COVID-19 patients. Director, AIIMS, Dr Sarman Singh told ‘The Hitavada’ that initial microbiological and pathological reports revealed that RNA (Ribonucleic Acid) of the virus was found in brain, pancreas, kidney, liver and heart of corona patients.

“Sadly, this means that the virus is affecting all vital organs in the body,” Dr Singh added. He also said that cases of inflammation in the veins and blood clotting due to thickening of blood and fibrosis came to light. Kidneys of 90 per cent patients who died due to coronavirus were affected severely and effect could also be seen on pancreas in 80 per cent of such patients.

Dr Singh said that virus was found in kidney of corona patients’ bodies and before this research, there were no evidence that virus would be found in pancreas and kidney.

However, most of the organs function normally after the patient recovers from corona. Pulmonologist, Hamidia Hospital, Dr Parag Sharma said that the virus reaches other parts of the body through blood. Damage on organs by the virus depends on the immune system of the person and also on viral load on the organ.
