Baba Amte’s granddaughter Dr Sheetal allegedly commits suicide

RENOWNED social worker from Warora tehsil Dr Sheetal Amte-Karajgi, the granddaughter of Late Baba Amte, legendary social worker, reportedly committed suicide, informed Sub Divisional Police Officer Nilesh Pande, Warora, on Monday. She was 39. Sheetal Amte-Karajgi, was Chief Executive Officer of Maharogi Seva Samiti (MSS), the organisation was founded by Baba Amte who was a recipient of the Ramon Magsaysay Award and Padma Vibhushan.
 
On being informed, the police reached the spot and took the body to Chandrapur civil hospital from Warora tehsil, some 50 kms away from Chandrapur, on Monday. The police department did not issue any statement whether she committed suicide or not. The police department is investigating the case in every aspect, informed SDPO Nilesh Pande. The police department has sealed out the room where the body of Dr Sheetal was found. The forensic team from Nagpur will conduct a thorough investigation in this regard. The body has been shifted to Civil Hospital for autospy. “The police department will issue a statement after completion of autospy,” claimed SDPO Pande.
 
Sources, however, informed that Dr Sheetal Amte-Karajagi committed suicide on Monday afternoon around 1 pm at her own residence at Anandwan. Sources informed that when the other family members were at home, Dr Sheetal went to her bedroom and injected herself with poisonous insulin. She was immediately moved to Sub district Rural Hospital here where the doctor declared her brought dead. Superintendent of Police, Chandrapur Arvind Salve, Warora SDPO Nilesh Pande, PI Deepak Khobragade and the squad reached Anandwan to investigate further and searched for some suicide notes. Few months earlier, there were reports of family disputes in Amte family. Meanwhile her mother Dr Bharti and brother Kaustubh had gone to Somnath and she was at Anandwan with her husband, son and Dr Vikas Amte. Last week she had circulated a Facebook post alleging the trustee did some misappropriations in the MSS. However, she herself deleted that controversial post within three hours from social media.
 
On November 22, the Amte family issued a joint statement that Maharogi Seva Samiti, Warora tehsil, is a leading social service organisation in the country. Three generations of Amtes are rigorously involved in social work under the banner of MSS since many years. Dr Sheetal Vikas Amte also contributed to the organisation. Dr Sheetal, however, was suffering with mental illness and depression. “She made some allegations against MSS that are totally are baseless,” mentioned a joint statement of Amte family. While talking with the media persons at Anandwan here the Superintendent of Police, Chandrapur, Arvind Salve stated that, through investigation was underway. Forensic teams from Chandrapur and Nagpur were deployed to investigate the cause behind suicide of Dr Sheetal Amte-Karajagi. The exact cause of the death will be determined after post mortem examination reports, added the SP. The last rites were performed later night on Monday at Anandwan mokshadham. The body of the deceased will be buried as late Baba Amte, and Sadhanatai Amte was buried at Anandwan.
