IN THE last workshop of the week-long series of workshops for various games under the title ‘Games: New Rules, Regulations and its Benefits’ through Google Meet platform, workshop on ‘Baseball and korfball’ was conducted by Dr Amit Tembhurne. Guest speaker Dr Tembhurne is Director of Physical Education Department in MB Patel College, Sakoli. He is national level korfball player and a qualified Level ‘O’ fitness trainer from NCA (BCCI) Bengaluru. He is a ex-fitness trainer of Vidarbha Ranji team. Member of Nagpur District Baseball Association. Dr Tembhurne in his session explained the sport of baseball in detail including the teams, the number of players, rules and regulations governing the sport. A baseball match is usually composed of nine innings and the team with the greater number of runs at the end of the game wins. If scores are tied at the end of nine innings, extra innings are usually played. Baseball has no game clock, although most games end in the ninth innings.

Dr Tembhurne, in his interactive session, said that baseball evolved from older bat-and-ball games already being played in England by the mid-18th century. This game was brought by immigrants to North America, where the modern version developed. By the late 19th century, baseball was widely recognised as the national sport of the United States. Baseball is popular in North America and parts of Central and South America, the Caribbean, East Asia particularly in Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

Dr Tembhurne also shed light on professional tournaments that are held all over the globe. Korfball is a ball sport with similarities to netball and basketball, said Dr Tembhurne. It is played by two teams of eight players with four female players and four male players in each team. The objective is to throw a ball into a netless basket that is mounted on a 3.5 m (11.5 feet) high pole. The sport was invented by Dutch school teacher Nico Broekhuysen in 1902. Korfball is played inside in winter and outdoors in spring and autumn. Size of the indoor court is 20m×40m as are most outdoor courts. An international korfball match typically consists of two (2) halves or four (4) periods, with the length varying depending on the competition.

The rules prevent physical strength dominating the game. Blocking, tackling, and holding are not allowed, nor is kicking the ball. Earlier, Dr Indrajit Basu read the report for the week-long workshop for various games and how it benefited the students. He also introduced the guest speaker Dr Tembhurne. During the valedictory programme, chief guest Dr MB Bagade, Principal, SK Porwal College Kamptee appreciated the initiative taken by five college for students. He hoped that this type of workshop will be conducted in future also for benefit of the students. A large number of students participated during the session.
