NMC developing 6 gardens under Amrut scheme

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) is developing six new gardens in the city under the central government’s Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (Amrut) scheme. The action plan for the city under National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) has mentioned more and more plantation and developing gardens in the city to improve the air quality. Jagruti Colony near Katol Road, Tulsi Garden in Shanti Nagar, MHADA Garden in Pardi, Sambhaji Park in Chhatrapati Nagar, Shastri Layout garden in Khamla, and Deshpande Layout Garden in Wardhaman Nagar are the six gardens that NMC is developing in the city to increase the green cover.
 
“The construction work in Deshpande Layout garden of Wardhaman Nagar is still going on and it will open for public within 2-3 months while other five gardens are open for public,” Amol Chourpagar, Garden Superintendent, NMC told The Hitavada. Under Amrut scheme, the civic body received Rs 4.5 crores under Green Space Development concept. Similarly, NMC has started to develop a rose garden at Bharatmata Ambedkar Garden situated on Central Avenue at Lakadganj in East Nagpur. “The Covid-19 pandemic slowed down the work of the rose garden but with in couple of weeks it will also completed,” said Chourpagar. Various species of rose like yellow rose, summer flow rose, double delight, black lady etc. were planted in the garden. NMC is also developing concept gardens in the city like this rose garden. “We have floated tender for the maintenance of the rose garden.
 
However, the other six gardens under Amrut scheme will be maintained by existing contractors,” said Garden Superintendent. NMC has total 175 gardens in the city including 40 Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) gardens. According to the action plan, Total 57,546 number of trees were planted in 2019-20 and the same number of trees to be planted in 2020-21 also. The action plan also stated that the approximately Rs 2.5 crores were provided to the civic body for development of green areas in 10 zones and the whole project would be completed till May 2021. “Though the pandemic affected the working, we are trying hard to complete the project in the time limit,” said Chourpagar.
