The Maharashtra Police personnel are being trained for launching of single emergency helpline number 112, which will connect people in distress with the police, fire and medical services, officials said. A top rank police official informed that like Police (100), Fire (101), Medical (108) and assistance to women in distress (1090) will be integrated with the 112 helpline number across the State. The State Police is purchasing 1,502 four-wheelers and 2,269 two-wheelers to respond to emergency calls in time. These newly-purchased vehicles will be added in the existing fleet of vehicles of police department.
It may be mentioned here that the single emergency number ‘112’ resembles to emergency number of developed countries. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Headquarters Dr Sandip Pakhale informed ‘The Hitavada’ that more than 450 police personnel from Nagpur Police will be trained to handle the helpline. “The personnel are being trained in phases and it will take next few weeks,” the DCP said. Similarly, the personnel of Fire Department and ambulance services will also be trained as the helpline is expected to be launched in early 2021. A top rank official said that citizens in distress can get immediate assistance from police, fire and ambulances in the state on dialing the helpline number ‘112’ from their phones.
The single emergency response number will be activated in different parts of the State in the near future. The call made on the number goes to the central sever of Emergency Response Centre and from there it is directed to police, fire or ambulances authorities on the basis of choice made by the user, the officer explained. The official claimed that Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh had reviewed the progress of this most ambitious project recently. After studying response time of the emergency call, the quality will be improved soon.
