INTRA VENTR ICUL A R Meningiomas (benign brain tumours)ingeriatric (60 years) age group are rare tumours. One such caseofVelumInterpositummeningioma was operated in Neuron Brain and Spine Centre, Dhantoli by Dr Pramod J. Giri, noted neurosurgeon and his team. The patient is recovering and doing well. Thepatientwasa61-yearladypresenting had severe headache with loss of consciousness and blurring of vision (features of intraventricular tumours) along with difficulty in balancing while walking.
MRI Brainscans showed a gianttumour (6.7 x 5.6 x 5.5 cm ) in the centre of the brainwithinthe third ventricle. She underwent a surgical excision for the same. Post-operation, the patienthadcompleteimprovement in headache andatpresent shehas mildimprovingweaknessintheleft upper and lower limbs. Velum Interpositum Meningiomas (VIM) are very rare group of tumours. To our knowledge, this is the largest VIM in neurosurgical literature to be operated in the geriatric age group. In common man terms, the tumour was nearly about the size of a standard tennis ball. The proximity to the critical neurovascular structures makes this tumour one of the most challenging cases for theneurosurgeon.Literatureanalysis shows that a total of less than 10 cases have been reported in the geriatric age group.
The geriatric agegroupismore fragileandprone to postoperative complications. To manage such highly complex cases successfully is a big testimony totheclinicalandtechnicalefficiency of Dr Pramod Giri and his neurosurgical team (Dr Sanjog Gajbhiye,DrShivajiDeshmukhand OT/ICUstaffincludingDr Sushant Admane and Dr Tushar Yelne) in Neuron Brain and spine centre. “A tumor as large as this one is a herculeantaskevenforexperienced neurosurgeon. Such a success storyis satisfying formeandmyentire team and it should encourage other patientswith similartumours to reach out to our hospital where a proficiently trained team awaits to createsuchmanymoresuccessstories.
