A horse-mounted police unit would be set up in Nagpur, which is the second capital of Maharashtra, on the lines of the Mumbai Police, said State Home Minister Anil Deshmukh and added that the unit would be deployed for traffic and crowd control. It may be mentioned here that Segway electric scooters were added in the fleet of Nagpur police for patrolling this month. Addressing a press conference at Police Gymkhana, Deshmukh said that the experiment of horse-mounted unit at Mumbai was successful.

“The unit will also be set up in Nagpur,” he said. Showing statistics of crime in Nagpur, the Home Minister said that crime cases are declined in the city in 2020 as compared to figures of last year. He also debunked National Crime Record Bureau’s year 2019’s statistics in which the rate of murder in Nagpur stood at 3.6 murders per one lakh population, which was the second highest after Patna (4.7). “The NCRB 2019 data showed a high crime rate in Nagpur per one lakh population. However, the NCRB had based its data taking into consideration the population of 25 lakh, but the population exceeds 30 lakh as many police stations from Nagpur Rural including Kamptee and Hingna are part of Nagpur Police Commissionerate now,” he said.

“A total of 88 murders registered in city this year against 90 murders in 2019. Last, year 147 robberies were recorded which declined to 127 this year. A total of 21 chain-snatching were reported this year compared to 56 last year, the Home Minister said. Similarly, 163 rape cases reported this year as compared to 163 this year, while 310 molestation cases registered this year as compared to 339 reported last year. The police have initiated stern preventive action against goons and detained 20 goons under MPDA while MCOCA was slapped against 52 anti-socials. Commissioner of Police Amitesh Kumar and Addl CP Navinchandra Reddy were present in the press conference.

Recruitment of 5,295 constables soon A total of 12,000 posts of police constables will be filled up in the Maharashtra Police. Of them, 5,295 will be recruited in the first phase very soon, informed Anil Deshmukh. The unit commanders will give the orders for recruitment shortly, he said and added that promotion of police officers will also be done within stipulated time period.

Shed mystery over Sushant Rajput’s death: HM to CBI Home Minister Deshmukh urged the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to reveal if Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput's death was a suicide or murder. “CBI should bring out its probe report into the case as soon as possible,” he said and added that people are eagerly waiting for the CBI’s report on its investigation into Sushant Singh Rajput’s death case.
