Man-animal conflict: Felines kill two persons in last 48 hours in Chanda

Man-animal conflicts are haunting the people of Chandrapur again. Two persons, including a teenage boy, were killed in two different incidents in the district in last 48 hours. On Thursday, a 60-year-old woman was killed in leopard attack in the forest adjacent to Dorli (Chinchgaon) village in Brahmapuri tehsil. The deceased has been identified as Tarabai Kharkate. She was found dead in area coming under Compartment No. 1012 of North Brahmapuri Forest Range.
 
Tarabai had gone to the outskirts of the village to dispose off cow dung and other garbage. A lurking leopard pounced upon her from the bushes, killing her on the spot. On being informed, RFO Poonam Bramhane and police team reached the spot. The body was taken to rural hospital for postmortem after necessary formalities. An initial compensation of Rs 20,000 has been given to family of the deceased towards funeral expenses and compensation will be given after necessary formalities are completed, informed Bramhane. She further said that the victim was killed in a leopard attack and pugmarks were spotted near the body.
 
It may be mentioned that this is second incident of man-animal conflict in under North Bramhapuri Range in last one month. Earlier, a 10-year-old boy was killed by a leopard when he was out on a morning walk. In yet another case of attack by a wild animal, an 18-year-old shepherd was killed in area coming under Kemara forest in Pombhurna tehsil on Wednesday afternoon. Sujat Nevare from Kemara had taken cattle for grazing into the forest. A tiger suddenly attacked him, killing Sujat on the spot. The body was detected during a search operation launched by villagers in the evening after the youth failed to return home. Forest officials have given ex-gratia aid to his kin.
 
29 deaths in man-animal conflict till now Chandrapur district has seen 29 cases of humans being killed in attack by wild animals in district this year. Total 23 people have fallen prey to the tiger while 5 people have been killed by leopards. There was been one case of death in wild boar attack as well.
