“India can become a global superpower and also play the role of guide of the world, if five principles propounded by Swatantryaveer V D Savarkar are adopted by the citizens, and especially the youngsters,” said Prof Dr Avinash Moharil, Dean, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University. Dr Moharil was speaking while delivering the first in the two-part lecture series on ‘Savarkar: Past, Present, and Future’. Professors’ Colony Mitra Mandal (PCMM) has organised the lecture series in the memory of Prof Madhukar and Vasundhara Bobde. The first part of the lecture was delivered on Sunday at Gruhini Samaj Hall in Hanuman Nagar. In Savarkar’s life, Dr Moharil said, nationalism was the most important value.

“His nationalism was firebrand, because of his deep commitment to the cause of nation,” he said. Abhinav Bharat, an organisation founded by Savarkar, inspired several eminent revolutionaries including Khudiram Bose, Anant Kanhere, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdeo, Rajguru etc. Another principle in Savarkar’s life was deep love for motherland, said Dr Moharil. “It is because of such a deep love for motherland that he took a plunge into the freedom struggle to the extent that his family suffered a great lot,” he said. Total devotion to the cause was the third principle in Savarkar’s life.

Though Savarkar did not approve of extreme non-violence of Mahatma Gandhi, he respected the latter for his thoughts. Gandhi’s greatness was in the fact that he did various experiments due to which common people participated in freedom struggle. On the other hand, Savarkar’s firebrand nationalism and revolutionary spirit could not be afforded by many. Still, Savarkar inculcated in many minds a positive intellectualism along with firebrand nationalism, Dr Moharil said.

“He stressed that man was the focal point of Dharma and not the God. Also, he stressed that real Dharma stood for progress of mankind. He firmly believed that the world will accept India’s intellectual glory when Indians treated a human being as a human being beyond caste barriers,” he observed. Savarkar had a sharp logical intellect rooted in Scientific temperament, and he flayed the evil practices in Hindu Dharma. He led the ‘Patit Paawan Mandir’ entry agitation and took a stand for elimination of casteism. Dr Moharil concluded that all these values from Savarkar’s life should be adopted by citizens, especially the youngsters. At the outset, Dr Ragini Kshirsagar, elder daughter of late Prof Madhukar Bobde, made introductory remarks. Parag Pandharipande welcomed the guests. Jayshree Wate shed light on the life and works of late Prof Bobde and his wife. Suresh Atrey, nephew of late Prof Bobde, also spoke on this occasion. The Day One lecture concluded with National Anthem. Dr Moharil will deliver the second and final part of his lecture at the same venue on Sunday.
