Nagpur Railway Station building being throughly cleansed using jet sprays.
Staff Reporter :
A never seen before cleaning operation is on at Nagpur Railway Station that is closed down for passenger carrying trains since March 22 onwards. Officials at Central Railway’s Nagpur Division have pressed in service the sanitation staff to thoroughly cleanse the station building, the exterior part and also the interiors. Now that there are no passenger train services, the station building is empty, barring skeleton staff to man the goods trains that are still in service. So from Tuesday the Engineering Branch has undertaken cleaning operation at the station premises.
For the time Nagpur station was opened for passenger train traffic this might be perhaps first time in its history when cleaning on such a large scale was undertaken by Indian Railways. In the daily operations sanitation staff hardly had time to clean the exteriors of heights in interior of station premises and daily work was limited to sweeping the platforms and offices. The station building is over 90-years old and has seen many ups and down in its history.
But events unfolding in aftermath of spread of coronavirus presents a never before challenge before mankind who are feeling threatened. And what else but adopting heightened measures for cleanliness to keep the virus at bay and the spraying of water through hi speed jets would helps in removing even the stubborn dirt lodged in corners and edges of the building. High pressure jets that provided overreach to overhead portion in building are in action in exterior and interior parts of Walua stone building of Nagpur Railway Station. The stone building thus provides easy chance to clean regular concrete structures with hi speed water jets. The sanitation of entire station area also became necessary in backdrop of COVID 19 as so many persons from across country has criss crossed through Nagpur in last fortnight.
Now the outbreak is slowly inching to its peak as several new positive patients are being found in State. Luckily at Nagpur no new cases have surfaced during last two and half weeks. Still the decision on part of railway officials to undertake cleaning will help in restoring glory of the Nagpur Railway Station building. As per the statistics with division, daily 1.5 lakh footfalls are witnessed at Nagpur Railway Station which is an indication of massive work load that officials and employees face in maintaining cleanliness. Now with absence of movement of passenger carrying trains, even the tracks were washed using special detergents to disinfect the premises thoroughly.
About 110 passenger, Mail/Express, EMUs criss-cross through Nagpur Railway Station on daily basis. Similarly 50 to 60 goods trains also criss-cross through Nagpur station daily. So in short Nagpur Junction among the busiest of Indian Railways and the cleansing of premises and circulating area, buildings, rooms, retiring rooms, and also originating trains would ensure maintenance of better hygiene conditions.
