DELHI Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal on Monday briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah over the violence in Delhi, as the death toll in clashes that erupted in north-east Delhi over the past week, has increased to 45 after four dead bodies were brought to Ram Manohar Lohia mortuary on Sunday in Delhi. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi was also present in the meeting that took place in Parliament on Monday morning.
Baijal was summoned by the Prime Minister to brief him about the situation in Delhi after the riots and the preventive steps being taken by the Delhi Government as well as Delhi Police. As Congress has sought Prime Minister’s reply in the Lok Sabha on Delhi riots and rejected Central Government’s approach that Amit Shah will give a statement on the issue, strategy is being prepared to deal with the issue. Earlier, there were at least 38 deaths reported from Guru Teg Bahadur hospital including 28 people brought dead and ten died in the hospital during the treatment. From LNJP, three deaths were reported. Now after four more bodies at RML, death toll reaches up to 45 in Delhi riots.
Over 200 people have been injured and properties worth crores damaged in the violence that continued for four days in north-east Delhi after clashes between pro and anti-CAA protesters took a communal colour. Later in the day, Lt Governor Anil Baijal visited riot-affected areas in north-east Delhi to take stock of the situation and interacted with locals. An official said the Lieutenant Governor, accompanied by senior police officials, visited Shiv Vihar, one of the worst-hit areas, and Karawal Nagar, Chand Bagh and Brijpuri areas. “We all should prioritise bringing back peace and tranquillity to restore normalcy,” Baijal said during his visit and directed police to continue deployment and take effective measures to counter rumour mongers.
“Police need to work closely with Aman Committees to build bridges between communities. All agencies including police, municipal corporation should work together to restore damaged infrastructure and improve civic amenities to instill confidence among the residents,” Baijal said in a statement. The Lt Governor reviewed law and order in the violence-hit areas with Additional Chief Secretary (Home) and Commissioner of Police, Delhi, before his visit. He was accompanied by Delhi Police Commissioner S N Shirvastava and other officers during his visit. Interacting with locals, he observed that the situation is gradually improving day by day, and urged them not to pay attention to rumours and avoid circulating unconfirmed messages. He directed Delhi Police to continue flag marches in the affected areas and take effective measures to counter rumour mongers. Delhi Police got over 1,880 distress calls, 40 arrested

DELHI Police said that they have arrested 40 people in connection with riot-related rumours that had spread in parts of the national capital on Sunday evening, when the department received 1,880 distress calls from people panicked by the false alarm of communal violence. The maximum 481 calls to police control room (PCR) came from west Delhi, 413 from south-east Delhi, 310 from Dwarka and 127 from south Delhi, while only two distress calls were made from north-east Delhi, the area where the riots broke out last week, the police said in a statement.
There were 222 calls from outer Delhi, 168 from Rohini, 22 from outer North, 54 from north-west Delhi, while there were 35 such calls from central Delhi, six each from north Delhi and east Delhi, and four from Shahdara, it added. Another 30 calls were made from South West Delhi. All these calls were made between 7 pm and 9 pm on Sunday, said Delhi police PRO M S Randhawa.
