After first case of jaundice reported in Steel City, the Bhilai Municipal Corporation has been geared up to tackle the spread of jaundice and has formed a special task force to check the quality of drinking water, supplied in various BMC wards especially in slum areas of Shastri Nagar Camp Bhilai and also collecting water samples from other resources such as borewell and handpumps. In the same context, the Health Officials from BMC authority has been appealed the city residents to boil drinking water and follow sanitary procedures while adding that a team from the Health Department has been visited the households where there is first case of jaundice surfaces and have collected samples of over 97 water sources.
At least 50 families of Shastri Nagar Camp and adjoining areas in Bhilai are under the grip of falling sick with jaundice following surfacing of first case. The city residents have alleged to be getting contaminated water supply since the last couple of days. Drinking water pipelines are getting contaminated as sewerlines crisscross them at some places, alleged the residents from Shastri Nagar.
However, the BMC authority has been taking elaborate measures to ensure supply of safe drinking water at the BMC wards. As part of preventive measure, the BMC Commissioner, Rituraj Raghuwanshi has said that the samples from all possible sources of water in the area have been collected and have been sent for test in the BMC laboratory. He added that distribution of chorine tablet and bleaching powder to people, are being undertaken by the BMC staffers via door-to-door campaign and they have been also making aware people with jaundice disease, its symptoms and preventive measures.
