An accused under Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), who was brought at Tuberculosis (TB) ward of Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC&H) for treatment, escaped from police custody. Accused Shijo Chandran alias Nadar (38), a resident of New Delhi, is a notorious goon having several offences of extortion, firing and kidnapping. The city police had slapped stringent MCOCA against him as preventive action. He was shifted to TB ward of GMC&H from Central Jail last year on July 7 as he was suffering from Tuberculosis.
 
Four police personnel were deployed at the ward for bandobast duty, said police. As per the report given by Police Naik Sahebrao Wankhede (50), attached to Police Headquarters, the accused slept at 9.30 pm after having dinner. A TB patient Tulshiram Dongre who is also getting treatment at the same ward approached the police personnel and told them that Shijo Chandran escaped from the ward. The cops immediately launched searches for him but failed to trace him.
 
The information was given to Imambada police station immediately. The police staff rushed to the spot and performed panchanama. A police official said that the accused escaped from window of washroom with mobile phone of Tulshiram Dongre in the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. An offence was registered at Imambada police station under the provisions of Indian Penal Code.
 
Shijo Chandran had attempted to murder his girlfriend in year 2012 by firing shot at his girlfriend. He met the woman on Facebook and love was blossomed between after frequent meetings. He was arrested by Hinga police from Mehbub Nagar of Andhra Pradesh. He had borrowed lakhs of rupees from friends and sold his house at Delhi. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Zone IV Nirmala Devi said that a team would be sent to arrest the accused.
