The Bastar Vishwavidyalaya (BVV), one of the major institutions of higher education in Bastar regions predominated by tribal communities, would be named after ‘Bastar Tiger’ former Congress stalwart Late Mahendra Karma. Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel announced this on Monday on the occasion the first ‘Jhiram Shraddhanjali Diwas’ observed across State to commemorate the sacrifice of senior leaders who were brutally killed by the Naxalites on June 25, 2013. Mahendra Karma had come to limelight through his Janjagran Abhiyan against Maoists in 1991, but without any support. Later, he garnered huge public support which had baffled the Maoists. BVV is largely devoted to post graduate studies and is widely known for its excellence in research and for its distinguished faculty.

The campus located near Dharampura-2 in Jagdalpur, has immense bio-diversity and a place of silent learning which give the campus a natural beauty. With 5 different departments in two Schools of Studies, the Vishwavidyalaya has over 100 staffand over 150 students. Talking to The Hitavada, Bastar University Vice-Chancellor Professor (Dr) Shailendra Kumar Singh said that Bastar is fast emerging as education hub as it attracts many students from across borders such as students from Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. While Odisha and Andhra Pradesh are bordering states, Government’s efforts to improve connectivity between Bastar and West Bengal has also yielded results, Professor Singh said.

How serious the State Government towards education development of Bastar can be gauged from the fact that it is going to start four-five new colleges, including three women’s college, in the region soon. The university, at present, has 10 teaching departments including professional courses like MBA, MCA and BEd. There are 600 students in the 10 departments. Presently, 36 colleges are affiliated to the university where around 55,000 students, including 18,000 regular students, are pursuing their studies. The doctoral studies have been proposed to be started at the University and the new courses like English, Hindi, politics and Tourism and Hospital management are coming up.
