RAIPUR,
In a sudden development, the State Government has appointed Inspector General of Police, Raipur Range Dr Anand Chhabra as the head of the Intelligence wing. An order in this regard was issued on Tuesday. 2001 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer Dr Chhabra has been given the charge of Inspector General of Police (IGP) (Intelligence) along with his current responsibility as the Inspector General of Police, Raipur Range. Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) and 1994 batch IPS office Himanshu Gupta has been appointed as Additional Director General of Police, Police Headquarters Raipur.
Earlier, two IPS officers D M Awasthi and Mukesh Gupta had discharged their duties as the Intelligence Chief of State along with the charge of Inspector General of Police, Raipur Range. Now Dr Chhabda becomes the third IPS officer to look after these two significant dual charge. The Intelligence Head of State directly reports to Chief Minister so the post is considered very powerful in bureaucracy. The official sources claimed that the Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel was unhappy over the sudden raid conducted by the Income Tax Department at the houses of some senior officials in government who are considered close to the Chief Minister.
Chief Minister Baghel was annoyed that the Intelligence Wing of State had no clue that such a major raid was conducted in State right under its nose and they had no inkling about it. Besides, the sources also claimed that State Government had sought a reply from Himanshu Gupta after the increasing incidents of Naxal activity in State. After the raids by the I-T, many were expecting such a move by Government and Himanshu Gupta had to pay the price for the failure of his department in some of the major fronts where it failed to gather intelligence inputs.
