‘Long term planning needed by coaches to produce medal winning athletes’

URGING coaches to chalk out a long-term plan to train budding athletes so that they produce results, Dr Dhananjay Welukar, Member, Board of Sports and Physical Education, Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University, said athletes and players should be asked to focus on winning medals for the country from beginning itself. Dr Welukar was speaking on the opening day of the 10-day Webinar ‘Making of Champions’ organised by the Physical Education and Sports Department of RTMNU. Speaking on the topic ‘finer point and my experience’ as the resource person, Dr Welukar said that coaches should start building confidence on athletes’ mind right from the beginning.
 
“Every player has different ability to grasp knowledge. All have different ability and energy to train. Coaches should have the ability to tackle and train each and every player in a different manner,” Dr Welukar asserted. “A sportspersons should be trained as per his/her abilities and in a way that the opponents do not get aware of the limitations,” added Welukar. The former Director of the Department said coaches should never discuss negative aspects with athletes as it would implant negativism in their minds. “Coaches should try old methods of coaching but with a new and different way so that athletes get benefited,” opined Welukar. Welukar was of the view that coaches should divide their training prorgamme in three sessions. “A three-session training could be beneficial for athletes.
 
The morning and evening sessions should be for physical training while the afternoon sessions should be used as theory during which finer technical knowledge about the game is explained,” said Welukar. Earlier, the Webinar was inaugurated by city’s international table tennis player Mallika Bhandarkar through a video message. Dr Suraj Yevtikar, Member, Board of Sports and Physical Education, RTMNU was the chief guest. Dr Sharad Suryawanshi, Director, Physical Education and Sports Department of RTMNU delivered the opening remark. Dr Ajay Karkare, Principal Rani Laxmibai Mahila Mahavidyala, Sawargaon presided over. Around 350 physical education teachers from all over country participated in the Webinar. The Webinar was compered by Sonali Sirbhate.
