While India’s factory output plummeted to record lows, the impact of lockdown was also visible on production at workshop of Nagpur Central Jail. As prisoners were released on parole owing to concerns over spread of COVID-19, the workshop’s output has taken a big hit.
Jail Superintendent Anup Kumre informed ‘The Hitavada’ that around 770 prisoners were released till date on emergency parole following orders of Supreme Court and State Government. “Of them, 200 were working in the Jail workshop,” he said. The workshop of Nagpur Central Jail manufactures carpentry products including bed, table, sofa, chair, entire furniture of court room including dais of judge; fabrication products including cupboard, table, desk, candle stand, book stands; powerloom products including bedsheets, napkins, towel, handkerchief.
The Central Jail here also provides bakery products to GMC&H and IGGMC&H. During the pandemic of Covid-19, the prisoners have also manufactured more than 80,000 face masks that were distributed among Government departments. The workshop was also busy manufacturing wooden material for Buldhana District Court. Kumre said that around 250 prisoners were working in the workshop before the lockdown started inside the jail itself. As a large number of prisoners including trained hands were released on emergency parole, working at the workshop was disrupted.
As of now there are only 50 trained hands for carrying out the work in workshop thereby delaying the completion of orders. The Central Jail has also shut down its car washing unit at Ajni square for want of trained hands. The jail was generating revenue of around Rs 5,000 per day, Kumre said. Central Jail workshop is known for its quality products of carpentry, especial furniture made from teak wood. The jail is manufacturing and providing furniture for all sort of administrative work.
