FOUR hardcore criminals brutally killed a goon over an old enmity near the gate of Shahu Garden at Somwaripeth in Sakkardara area minutes after Monday midnight. Identified as Gaurav Vinod Khadatkar (24), the deceased was a resident of House No 244/3, Somwari Quarters. Cops arrested four dreaded criminals, including an externee, for killing Gaurav with a wooden rafter, a handcart handle, stones and tile pieces.
 
The accused have been identified as Kartik Umesh Choube (24), Shahbaz alias Babu Mustafa Khan (25), both residents of Somwari Quarters, Raja alias Sahil Shaikh Baba (22) and Mrunal Girish Bhapkar (25), both residents of Taj Nagar. Prima facie, the murder may be a fall-out of an old rivalry between Gaurav and Kartik over establishing supremacy in the area to extort money from people. A hardened criminal, Kartik was externed from the city by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone IV) because of his nuisance in the area. He got married to a girl when he was in Wardha. He then returned to city during lockdown by violating externment orders.
 
Kartik, Shahbaz, Raja and Mrunal had an old enmity with Gaurav over some financial dealings. On seeing Gaurav trying to establish his supremacy in the area, Kartik decided to teach him a lesson. On Monday night, Kartik, Shahbaz, Raja and Mrunal consumed liquor. They then caught Gaurav and forcibly took him near the gate of Shahu Garden. After abusing Gaurav, they smashed his head with a hardcart handle, a wooden rafter, tile pieces and stones killing him on the spot. The killers then fled the spot. The news about Gaurav’s murder spread like jungle fire in Somwari Quarters.
 
Gaurav’s family members, relatives and neighbours gathered at the spot where his body was lying in a pool of blood. Staff from Sakkardara Police Station led by Satyawan Mane and Sub-Inspector Rathod arrived and sent the body to Government Medical College & Hospital for post-mortem. After recording the statement of Aditya Khadatkar (27), younger brother of the deceased, cops nabbed the accused quartet. Sakkardara Police registered an offence under Sections 302,342,120 (b),114,188, 34 of the Indian Penal Code, read with Section 51(b) of Disaster Management Act and 142 of Maharashtra Police Act against Kartik, Shahbaz, Raja and Mrunal. Further investigations are underway. 
 
Killers also attack cops IMAMBADA Police also booked the four murder accused -- Kartik Choube, Shahbaz Khan, Raja alias Sahil Shaikh and Mrunal Bhapkar -- for assaulting cops before making a dramatic bid to escape on a moped in Chandan Nagar. Police booked them on charges of using criminal force to deter public servants from discharge of their duty, rash driving, causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others, negligent act likely to spread infection of disease dangerous to life and disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant.
 
After killing Gaurav Khadatkar, the killers fled the spot last night. A team of Sakkardara Police comprising API Awhad, Constable Roshan Choudhary and others got information that the killers were hiding near Corporation School in Chandan Nagar. Around 1 am on Tuesday, the team rushed to the spot and surrounded the accused quartet.
 
On seeing the cops, they tried to flee on a moped (MH-49/VE-8935) after deliberately hitting them. The accused lost balance and fell off the moped. When policemen caught them, they attacked them. Cops overpowered the accused and took them into custody. Some policemen sustained injuries on their legs. Following a complaint lodged by Constable Choudhary, police registered an offence under Sections 353, 279, 337, 269 and 188 of the Indian Penal Code against the murder accused.
